As part of the HLF, All Our Stories project, we are pleased to announce that we have asked CFA Archaeology Ltd, from Cleckheaton to be our archaeologist on the project, and do a geophysical survey of the Park to establish what archaeology there might be to help us put together the history of the Park. CFA is a professional cultural heritage consulting organization.
The survey will take place between the 24th – 26th July, 9am to 5pm, during the Festival of British Archaeology 13th – 28th July (there are lots of other events mentioned on the site from all over Yorkshire and the UK), It will be carried out by GSB Prospection, who are the industry leaders and who were the geophysicists in residence on Time Team.
We are hoping that the survey may help us to establish if there was a farmed rabbit warren on Clapper Brow; also if there are any traces of the Tannery at the Kelcliffe end. Other land uses, and the location of features like old drainage pipes (of which we know there are some, as well as at least one pump) may also come to light. It will complement the historic record research being undertaken by Barbara Winfield.
The last week in July will also be the start of school holidays and we are hoping that local children will come and see the survey done and ask questions of the archaeologists who will explain the science behind geophysics and demonstrate survey methods . A key component of this project is to involve local people, and if anyone would like to volunteer, CFA have said they can involve volunteers in office based elements of the project at a later stage.
