Parkinson’s Park Apple Day 2018

Comment left on Facebook from David Lawson

“It was nice to meet you today at the apple even, no doubt one of your ‘core’ activities. I loved the piece of cake and then enjoyed the walk back over Yeadon Banks to work off the calories. I hope the event was a success for you.”

CELEBRATE AUTUMN IN THE PARK THIS WEEKEND

Two events in the Park this weekend, with hopefully beautiful autumn days to admire the colours of leaves and berries.

Saturday 20th – 1-3pm Prirates and Mermaids – a day in the woods for children of all ages with the Codswallop team.  The last day in the woods event this year.

Sunday 21st – 2-4pm today is National Apple Day and we celebrate with a get together in the Park with apple cake and juice, apple games, and the Apple Trail exploring the variety of fruit trees we have in the Park.  We have a few unidentified trees we need help to name.  If you have apples from your own trees bring them along to swap with others, in an apple exchange, or simple for others to try.

Identifying Fruit In The Community Orchard

Martyn Hornsby Smith had written a run down of all the apples, pears and plums we have in the community orchard, which you can find on our website under the Environment header.

Sadly, there are a number of other trees in the Park that have been planted over the years whose variety we do not know.

If anyone would like to find out more, there is an Apple Identification Day on Sunday at Wakefield run by Helping Britain Blossom.  Details here.

If anyone finds out the names of the unknown trees, perhaps you would let us know and we can label them.

Pictures from A Gala

Once again the sun shone on the Parkinson’s Park Children’s Gala as Guiseley Brass Band played and Professor Dan twisted his balloons into mermaids and entertained the children.  A ‘flight’ of fairies flitted around the Park getting their faces painted for the Fancy Dress Competition – which was won by Harry Potter!  ‘He’ said that it was great to win his second Children’s Gala!!

The Scarecrow family did think they too Continue reading

Children’s Gala 2018 – 2nd September, 2pm.

We continue with the Crompton Parkinson’s tradition of an annual Children’s Gala in the Park – this year is the sixth Gala run by FOPP, and will be attended by the Lord and Lady Mayoress of Leeds.

The theme will be Fairy Tales,  so get out those Aesop’s Fables, Hans Christian Anderson, Brother’s Grimm, or Traditional English, Irish, Scottish Welsh or Yorkshire Tales for inspiration.   We want to see a Park full of dwarfs, sprites, boggarts, dragons, lost souls, mermaids, giants, unicorns, witches, warlocks, trolls, goblins, fairy godmothers, talking toys, fantastic beasts,  questing heroes, and inquisitive heroines.
