Tree planting in the sunshine

A loyal band of local people met in the park on a cold Sunday to help create a community orchard for Guiseley.  It was a frosty morning but the sun was shining and soon warmed the ground – and us.

Briefing the troops

After a quick briefing by Josie about how to give the trees the best start, the volunteers dispersed and began digging.

It was quickly discovered that the ground towards the bottom of the park was incredibly compacted, full of rubble and water logged.  So the majority of the trees were planted further up the park above Greenshaw Terrace.

Digging and digging and more digging....Fifteen trees in total were planted which included 10 apple trees, 3 pears and 2 plum trees.  These include Bramley, Red Devil, Lord Derby, James Grieve, Egremont Russet, Ribston Pippin and Discovery apples; Concorde, Conference and Invincible Pears and Jubilee and Laxton’s Plum.

The trees were delivered by a local Leeds nursery on Friday as bare rooted plants so needed to be planted quickly before they Continue reading

Would You Like To Play The Drums On The Lantern Parade? – Workshop

Our two drummers from 2013

Our two drummers from 2013

On last year’s parade we felt there could have been more drums to beat out the parade ‘rhythm’.   So, this year our professional drummer, John Franklin-King, is going to teach 10 people how do ‘beat the drum’ so that we can spread people out through the parade.

John can teach 10 people how to do this, and will hold a workshop on the evening of 5th December, time and place still to be arranged.

So, if you would like to play the drum for the parade,  please email us on parkinsonspark@gmail.com.  It would be great to make this a truly community based parade.

Friends enhancing the Park with daffodil bulb planting

The bottom boundary of Parkinson’s Park was a hive of industry this morning with a great number of folk joining in with the spring bulb planting . We were fortunate to receive 1000 narcissus bulbs free from Groundwork Trust and with everyone pitching in they all got planted in less than an hour,  just finishing before the heavens opened.

Many thanks to Steve and Sue, Ann, Ben and Lucyanne, Jane and Nick, Nicola and Violet, Josie, Sarah, Jacob and Finlay.  Hopefully in spring we will be rewarded with a wonderful display. Continue reading

Memorial Bench for the Park

I am pleased to be able to pass on the news that as of Thursday 13th March 2014, Parkinson’s Park has a new Bench. This one is a memorial Bench donated to the Park by Matthew Pinkney in memory of his wife Jenny who sadly passed away in 2013 aged 28. It is the Ogilvie KC1800, or the nice new shiny looking black bench, that you pass on your left as you walk up the hill from the Greenshaw Terrace entrance. It is fitting that the Bench looks towards the new Redrow estate where Matthew and his young son lives. Thanks to Matthew for donating the Bench, it is well located and will serve the growing community of Park users in future years to come.

All Our Stories – Piecing the Evidence Together

Barbara Winfield reading Matthew Craven's will at the Borthwick Institute

Barbara Winfield reading Matthew Craven’s will at the Borthwick Institute

Local history is like a detective game:by itself a scrap of information seems worthless,  but, when put together with a pile of other scraps, slowly, if you are luck,  a picture will begin to emerge.

Following a trawl around local archive indexes,  Barbara Winfield has done a fantastic job locating a number of scraps of information – newspaper cuttings, wills, and deeds – about Kelcliffe and its owners.  To date she has visited Wakefield Registry of Deeds, West Yorkshire Archives at Calderdale, and the Borthwick Institute at York University.

So, one evening, just before Easter, as snow lay deep on the ground in early spring, we sat down to see what we could make of the scraps.  A key piece of work was to try to work out how the field names have changes over the centuries.  This was done  by a process of Continue reading

White Cross Vetinary Nurse, Amanda Hatfield withe the Hillside Bin

Saturday 2nd March;  what a beautiful sunny spring morning,  and what better time to celebrate the “official” bin naming ceremony at the end of Hillside Avenue.  After many months of negotiation and perseverance the new bin has finally made it into position.

Many thanks to Tim Harrison and staff at White Cross Vets Practice for sponsoring the cost of the bin,  and to committee members Josie Brooks, Nicola Denson and Chris Parapia for their persistance.  Thanks also to Councillor Latty and Martin Beaumont from Leeds City Council for ensuring that the bin was supplied.

Thanks also to White Cross Vets for supplying us with some “doggie” bags which we gave out to passing dog walkers with very positive comments.
