We would ask that paraders stick to the pavements and do not stray onto the road. And, as always, that children are accompanied by adults and dogs kept under close control. If the weather is pouring down, we will cancel the event, so watch out on the day on our Facebook page. Parkinson’s Park.
Parkinson’s Park is taking part in the Great British Spring Clean, organized by Keep Britain Tidy.
Saturday 22nd March, 10 am – 12 noon. Meet at the Farm gate. Litter pickers and bags provided.
Litter-picking is a simple action. It can make an immediate difference. This act also creates a visible change in the environment where we live, work, and play. Think of it as an opportunity to get out in the fresh air and make a difference.
Come and help tidy the Park, to get rid of all the rubbish and pieces of plastic from various activities.
Parkinson’s Park is lovely this time of year, where you can enjoy fresh air and spring flowers. This year, the park supports a great cause: Purple4Polio.
Parkinson’s Park has teamed up with Aireborough Rotary Club. They have planted purple crocus bulbs. These bulbs add color to highlight that polio remains a global issue.
See if you can find the word “POLIO” made from purple crocuses at the top of the park.
The purple color is important. On mass polio immunization days, a child’s little finger is painted purple. This shows they have received the vaccine.
Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland’s Purple4Polio campaign invites communities to help eliminate polio. Each year, Rotary clubs plant millions of purple crocus bulbs to raise awareness.

DUE TO THE POOR WEATHER FORECAST TOMORROW’S APPLE DAY IS CANCELLED
Sorry to all those looking forward do it.
Apple Day is an autumnal celebration of one of our most popular fruits. We celebrate the diversity of apple varieties, and their culinary versatility. It’s an occasion to enjoy the flavors of apples in various forms, from fresh apples, apple cakes, apple juice, and of course, lets not forget apple ciders. Apple Day enables us to get outside and experience the season and to remember the joy of natural simple delicous food and drink.
The event will take place at Parkinson’s Park’s very own community orchard which you can find at the bottom corner at the entrance that comes in from Greenshaw Terrace.
There will be apple juice, apple cakes, apple recipes and an opportunity to learn more about apples and the varieties growing in the orchard. I can assure you that the Gooseberry and Apple Crumble muffin is a delight not to be missed.
For safety please wear sturdy footwear, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Clean hands are also vital.
Please be aware that the unseasonal and inclement weather has brought down a branch from one of the Oak trees that lines the path that run up through the wooded area. Please take great care if using that part of the Park.
The Friends of Parkinson’s Park (FOPP) have been in touch with the company who maintain the Park who will take action when they can. FOPP have been out, armed with suitable sawing implements, and removed those parts of the tree limb that had overlapped the path and caused an obstruction.
Photos of offending tree branch, and sawing process included. Please take care!
This morning, in the early hours that coincided with sunrise, a group of us ventured out onto the Park to experience one of nature’s true splendours, the famous “Springtime Dawn Chorus”.
Binoculars at the ready
Bleary eyed and fuelled with coffee we gathered together at the Nethercliffe Entrance, and soon were wide awake. It was impossible not to be when listening in to the Park’s extensive bird population all proudly advertising themselves and warning off rivals who might dare to enter their territory.
Fortunately for us, we had local bird watching expert and founder of the Wharfedale Wildlife Facebook Group (WWG), Darren Shepherd in attendance, ready and willing to offer us guidance and decipher the mass of sound that we were confronted by.
Parkinson’s Park sits on the hillside behind the old Crompton Parkinson site on Netherfield Road: access is via entrances on Kelcliffe Lane, Greenshaw Terrace, Parkinson Way, Nethercliffe Crescent and Hillside Avenue. This historic area was given to the people of Guiseley to use as a park by Frank & Albert Parkinson in the 1930’s: it has been used for walks, play, and events ever since . Now owned by Bellway Homes, basic maintenance is done by Meadfleet The Friends of Parkinson’s Park CIC (FOPP) was set up to once again make the Park an attractive green space for community use and events, whilst helping to manage its varied natural habitats. On these pages you can read the history, examine the ecology and sign up to follow and comment on progress – as well as tell us your own stories of the park.
On Sunday September 4th, FOPP held its Annual Children’s Gala, with the topical theme of Parkinson’s Park goes to Rio!
The weather seemed to match our theme, but overall a great day was had by all with mini-Olympics, Community Games including Tug of War, Egg and Spoon, Sack race run very professionally by young people from Guiseley Baptist Church. Fairground games provided by Westgate School were enjoyed by all young and old. The pillory proved a hit with youngsters delighting in getting Mum, Dad or grandparents thoroughly soaked.
Many Friends and residents turned out to help with setting up for the day and a wide range of local organisations chipped in to support us including Guiseley Methodist ChurchScout Leaders, Litter FreeContinue reading →
On the 30th August the installation of the Bog Garden took place. It was a warm sunny day and we were very fortunate to have the input from a group called Open Country who drew up the plan and the planting regime for the garden.
They arrived mid-morning with their helpers and also with a corporate group from the Department of the Environment who had volunteered for the day and were aiming to bring the Garden to completion in one day.
Everyone set to work digging out the area, then laying the liners and filling in the area with plants suitable for the setting.
In all 16 helpers were involved and were kept going with refreshments provided by FOPP.
The garden is situated down near the Netherfield/Nethercliffe entrance to the park. Nick and Open Country will be back to do further work later this month and have agreed to make occasional visits to undertake any maintenance work.
We were very fortunate to receive funding from the Northern Horticultural Society and from Meadfleet and we offer our thanks for their support.
