NEWS UPDATE – Park Maintenance and Events

Just a few updates on ‘happenings’

Forest School

Last Sunday’s Forest School for the Little Friends of Parkinsons Park went very well.  The day was lovely and Amanda Newham from Chevin Forest School brought lots of activities for the 19 youngsters to do – all related to the natural environment.   We will be looking to hold more such events in the Park in the Future.  Photo by Liakat Parapia.

Anti-Social Behaviour

Further to the issue with bonfires being lit in the Park.  The Police have now been notified and will follow up several lines of enquiry we have given them.  In addition,  FOPP attended the Guiseley and Rawdon Forum meeting on Wednesday 17th May, to talk to the Police and Local Councillors about the issue.

The Police informed us that there is a ban on drinking within the parks in Guiseley including Parkinson’s Park: and that they will be patrolling in the Park more regularly. They added that the ban was due to be expanded to drugs!!   One lady also that she had seen torches in the Park late at night and heard gunshots; this was a surprise to many; has anyone else heard gunshot?

Longer Evenings Bring Fire Hazard

Longer nights bring out the people who like to light ‘camp’ fires in the bottom copse and by the top bench.   This is obviously dangerous and to be discouraged.  The park can get dry, there is a lot of trees and scrub,  and it runs very close to the houses on Bellway.   There was an incident last night,  where local residents had to put out a fire lit by a ‘group of lads’,  who also left debris scattered around.    If you see anything that needs reporting to the Police, then call 101 after an event, or 999 during an event.

We have set up Parkwatch so that if people see such incidents they can send out a quick alert and the matter can be dealt with as appropriately and reported.  If you’d like to join Parkwatch email us on parkinsonspark@gmail.com.   It might stop a serious event occurring that endangers life and property.

Join The Parkwatch

Do you want to keep your Park safe? Join Parkwatch – a new initiative set up by the Friends of Parkinson’s Park after advice from West Yorkshire Police, to help curtail anti-social and criminal activity.

If you live around the Park email us for full details on parkinsonspark@gmail.com and become one of the Parkwatch team.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS

10320434_10207079597763815_5638762537637499641_nThe Friends of Parkinson’s Park would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a good New Year.

2016 saw a big step taken as we became a Community Interest Company; in addition we  expanded our community events, and enhanced the Park with the bog garden.  But we are suffering from increasing vandalism, and 2017 will be a year to try and find solutions.  The New Year will also hopefully see another important year in the development of the history of the Park.

We look forward to working with everyone in the New Year to provide, maintain and enhance this vital community area.

Bug hotel is no more !!

Like other organizations, we have had been hit by a spate of vandalism over the Summer months, which has destroyed facilities such as our ‘bug hotels’ and some of the gates.  Not only do we have to replace these items, but we also need to try to increase actions to curb this wanton destruction – all of this takes funding.

We are therefore taking part in this year’s Grow Your Tenner Campaign run by Localgiving.

During this campaign Localgiving will match all online donations of up to £10, and monthly direct debit donations up to £10 per month for 3 months.

Parkinson’s Park Crime and Order

Crime in the Park

P1020687

Pallets burnt near the wooden bench

We are very sorry to report that Criminal behaviour is increasing in the Park especially to do with drugs, arson and general destruction of Park features from gates to trees.   The Police have been notified and have been to the Park to look at the issues.   To start with  patrols by PCSO’s will be increased.  The registration numbers of potential drug dealers have been reported for enquiry.  All drug related debris is removed by a number of people as soon as it is spotted.

The Bug Hotel in the copse destroyed and the Pallets burnt near the bench.

We are not alone in facing this growing level of crime;  Engine Fields in Yeadon is another Friends led green space in Aireborough that suffers from sporadic bouts of criminal damage.  Damage that is frequently mended by community orientated local people.

There are also running battles with destruction, often arson, at Guiseley Cricket Club where expensive covers have been destroyed, and other sports and community facilities in Guiseley and Yeadon. Continue reading

Hillside Road Entrance Spruced Up

It’s amazing how much you can do with a few willing volunteers and a short space of time. A merry band of people including Chris Parapia, Barbara Winfield, Josie Brooks, Martyn Hornsby-Smith, Horace Price and Nicola Denson, met Thursday (30th June) to plant some wildflowers kindly donated by Carol Rowe around the Hillside Road entrance.

Screen Shot 2016-08-01 at 20.05.34 Screen Shot 2016-08-01 at 20.05.43The entrance had benefitted from new steps in the past but was overdue some additional planting to make it a more attractive entrance to the park.

With time in short supply we quickly got on clearing the area of weeds and grass, digging it over, cleaning the steps and planting the new wildflowers. We marked the edge with stones so people could be sure something had been happening there.

We hope you think it looks much better. Unfortunately we forgot to take any before pictures but here’s a one of the activity taking place and the end results. Continue reading
