Welcome to Parkinson’s Park

Featured

Parkinsons ParkParkinson’s Park sits on the hillside behind the old Crompton Parkinson site on Netherfield Road: access is via entrances on Kelcliffe Lane, Greenshaw Terrace, Parkinson Way, Nethercliffe Crescent and Hillside Avenue.  This historic area was given to the people of Guiseley to use as a park by Frank & Albert Parkinson in the 1930’s: it has been used for walks, play, and events ever since .   Now owned by Bellway Homes, basic maintenance is done by Meadfleet   The Friends of Parkinson’s Park CIC (FOPP) was set up to once again make the Park an attractive green space for community use and events, whilst helping to manage its varied natural habitats.    On these pages you can read the history, examine the ecology and sign up to follow and comment on progress – as well as tell us your own stories of the park.

Annual Children’s Gala

gala-02 gala-03On Sunday September 4th, FOPP held its Annual Children’s Gala, with the topical theme of Parkinson’s Park goes to Rio!

The weather seemed to match our theme, but overall a great day was had by all with mini-Olympics, Community Games including Tug of War, Egg and Spoon, Sack race run very professionally by young people from Guiseley Baptist Church. Fairground games provided by Westgate School were enjoyed by all young and old. The pillory proved a hit with youngsters delighting in getting Mum, Dad or grandparents thoroughly soaked.

Many Friends and residents turned out to help with setting up for the day and a wide range of local organisations chipped in to support us including Guiseley Methodist Church  Scout Leaders, Litter Free Continue reading

Bog Garden for the Park

bog-garden-01 bog-garden-03 bog-garden-02On the 30th August the installation of the Bog Garden took place. It was a warm sunny day and we were very fortunate to have the input from a group called Open Country who drew up the plan and the planting regime for the garden.

They arrived mid-morning with their helpers and also with a corporate group from the Department of the Environment who had volunteered for the day and were aiming to bring the Garden to completion in one day.

Everyone set to work digging out the area, then laying the liners and filling in the area with plants suitable for the setting.

In all 16 helpers were involved and were kept going with refreshments provided by FOPP.

The garden is situated down near the Netherfield/Nethercliffe entrance to the park. Nick and Open Country will be back to do further work later this month and have agreed to make occasional visits to undertake any maintenance work.

We were very fortunate to receive funding from the Northern Horticultural Society and from Meadfleet and we offer our thanks for their support.

Clean for the QueenClean for the QueenWinter Working Party – 5th March, 10am – 12noon
Clean for The Queen is a campaign to clear up Britain in time for Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday, which will be officially celebrated in June 2016.When she came to the throne litter was not the problem that it is today. Food packaging, plastic bottles, takeaway meals and cigarette butts have all contributed to a growing menace that affects our wildlife, streets, countryside and sense of pride. What better way could we show our gratitude to Her Majesty than to clean up our country?Clean for The Queen weekend on March  4th, 5th and 6th 2016.

Details for Lantern Parade 2015

Parade Route

Parade Route

Shhhssss,  don’t mention the weather.   Here is the route for today’s Lantern Parade – unless it absolutly pours with rain,  the event will go ahead.   Please try and keep to the pavement as much as possible.  If any cars that park on the pavement on the route, especially down Kelcliffe Lane could not do so between 4pm and 4.30pm, that would be much appreciated.  the Police have been informed of the route.

Please gather for the procession from 3.45pm,  we set off from the Park at 4pm.    Bring something to hang on the Advent tree and make a wish .  The event will have marshalls in hi-viz jackets, together with fire blanket and first aid, if it is required. (Hopefully not.)   There is woodchip down in the Park,  but it is still muddy from all the rain, so good grip footwear advisable.  If anyone cannot join us in the Park, then you are welcome just to come to the cross to sing the carols.

Pick up a carol sheet as you leave the Park,  and please hand it back at the end of the event for use next year.  The Carol Sheets are donated by Embrace.IMG_0748

We now have 10 local people (all being well) who have stepped forward to play the drums,  covering 4 generations.  We’d like to say a big thank you to them, the Parade is all about local people taking part.   They are led by John Franklin King and the group spent an hour on Friday evening learning how to drum the right beat (and the wrong one :-)) in St Oswalds Church.  Competing with the bell ringers.

The lead lantern this year will be provided by Handmade Parade,  and there will be few parade lanterns to handout to anyone who’d like to carry one – so come early for those.  But the basic idea is  to bring your own Lanterns. Continue reading

P1060248We are still looking for 5 drummers for the Lantern Parade – no previous experience is needed.  This is a really important part of the whole atmosphere of the Lantern Parade, and those that did it last year said it was great fun, and have signed up for this year, but we do need some more people.  The drum will be provided, plus tuition on Friday 18th December at 7pm, St Oswalds. email jakirkby@btconnect.com

PARKINSON’S PARK ADVENT TREE DRESSING TODAY – POSTPONED

P1060248Given the weather overnight, which is continuing this morning, we’ve decided to postpone the Advent Tree Dressing today until later in the week. We’ll put the lights up on the first available ‘dry’ day, and the dressing we already have – please add your own decorations as and when you want over the advent period. The idea is for the decoration to build up.
